Light Cruiser Comparison |
|
For purposes of this page, a 'Light Cruiser' is a Size Class 3 ship with a Movement Cost less than 1. Several empires skip the CL niche and rely on a MC 1 'cruiser' and smaller, SC 4 ships. Light Cruisers are often only a little more powerful than a destroyer, but have the increased costs of Size Class 3. Therefore a number of races skip this class. However, as they are easier to build than a Heavy Cruiser, they are often the basis of all the 'heavy' mission-specific variants. The Federation CL is an old class, being warp-refitted vetrans of the Earth-Romulan War. It is possibly the only Movement Cost 3/4 ship in the game, making it a larger ship than all the other CLs. It is a sturdy design, capbable of taking a good amount of punishment. The Kzinti CL is effectively a smaller version of the CS. It lacks the in-depth defensive armament, but has pretty much the same offensive direct-fire armament on a smaller hull. The CLC is a leader version of the Kzinti CL, or a Command Cruiser built on a CL hull. It has two extra APR and expanded primary weapons arcs. The Gorn CL is also a smaller version of the CA. It is effectively just the forward bubble and center hull, and can be converted into a CA by adding the rear bubble and mounting new engines. The Tholian C is actually two PC hulls welded together. It is meant as a heavy cruiser, and while it's not quite as rugged as one, it is much tougher than most CLs. The Lyran CL was meant to suppliment the numbers of heavy cruisers, and was considered a disappointment as it was not as capable as the CA. The WYN OCR is an Orion CR built in the shipyard in the cluster, with a few features missing and handed to the WYN navy; the OFC is a 'beefed up' version of this to lead their response forces.
